Updates

Hello - not doing the weekly updates so much any more (getting to be a bit repetitive) but there are plenty of example weeks below showing what the dogs typically do on their runs.

When the occasional post does go up, I'll give notice on our Facebook page. Please feel free to follow along there.

Thanks!

Week Ending - Feb. 17

Monday, 2/11/13
w/ Rowdy & Flynn @ Highline Canal trail, 58 mins / 5.9 miles
Solid run as these two match up well together and have a similar pace. We started out heading southeast and did an out & back run on the paved trail.

w/ Maja & Payton @ Bluffs Park, 62 mins / 5.85 miles
Today was a new route for them and it will be our main one going forward. Ran west from the house over to the bluffs, up on the trail and took the loop east all the way around and back down to RidgeGate Pkwy, then west again to the house. Great workout for them.

Maja
Tuesday, 2/12/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 62 mins / 6.6 miles
Solid run from his house over to the park to explore the scene and get in his regular loops.

w/ Optimus & Charlotte @ Great Lawn Park, 61 mins / 6.2 miles
Smooth run for these two, we did a big loop starting from the north and heading south to the soccer fields and golf course on the other side of Lowry.

w/ Nikko & Louie @ Clear Creek Canyon, 63 mins / 5.75 miles
Good times running down into the Canyon and then heading east and exploring the paths along the river in downtown Golden.

Julie
Wednesday, 2/13/13
w/ Julie @ Cheesman Park, 53 mins / 5.3 miles
Picked her up from MaxFund and we were off to the park. Nice day and she had a blast trying to tree squirrels and looping around 4 times.

w/ Maja & Payton @ Bluffs Park, 61 mins / 5.85 miles
Same route as Monday but a slightly better pace. Payton was spunky as ever and had got in some extra agility work spinning around in all the snow patches.

Thursday, 2/14/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 60 mins / 6.5 miles
Fairly standard run for the Griff Man, he had fun as always and almost caught a goose at the park.

w/ Nikko & Louie @ North Table Mtn, 65 mins / 6 miles
It had just started snowing so we had the place basically to ourselves. Good run straight up to the top and then we cruised the trails before descending to the north and finishing the loop.

Friday, 2/15/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 62 mins / 6.8 miles
A little more pep in the legs this morning, so we kept a faster pace getting over to the park and getting in his miles.

w/ Optimus & Charlotte @ Great Lawn Park + dog park, 61 mins / 6.1 miles
We started north of the park, ran the trails down south of Lowry and cruised the soccer fields before taking a pit stop at the dog park there. They had a a great time sprinting around and playing before we got back to running and finishing the route back to the truck.

Charlotte & Optimus
Saturday, 2/16/13
solo @ Green Mtn, 2hr33 / 12 miles
The snow up in Boulder was melting so the trails were a bit sloppy which added some extra fun. Ran Bear Canyon up to Mesa, over to Chat Park, up Gregory/Ranger to Green summit, down Green Bear and Bear Canyon to complete the loop.

Sunday, 2/17/13
w/ Flynn & Otis @ Platte River Trail, 40 mins / 4.25 miles
Nice morning run to get these two some miles. We enjoyed exploring the sunny paths along the river down past Cherry Creek and the REI.

totals: 14hr21 / 83.1 miles

Week Ending - Feb. 3

Monday, 1/28/13
w/ Rowdy @ Highline Canal trail, 59 mins / 5.85 miles
Nice steady cruise with Rowdy as always, we headed north on the trail and took a few pit stops for him to sniff and explore.

w/ Maja & Payton @ Bluffs Park, 62 mins / 5.7 miles
Ran from the house over to the bluffs via a slightly different route and extended their regular distance a bit. They didn't seem to mind, great workout overall.

Tuesday, 1/29/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 61 mins / 6.25 miles
The snow and ice slowed us a little this morning but he was determined to get over to the park for our regular loops.

Griffin stares down the ducks at Wash Park
w/ Charlotte @ Cheesman Park, 60 mins / 6 miles
Great run overall and it was her first time hitting the 6 mile mark. We looped the park several times and then went exploring through the adjacent neighborhood.

w/ Nikko & Louie @ Rocky Mtn Lake Park, 63 mins / 6 miles
Nice, this brotherly duo finally got to 6 miles. It's fun seeing them more focused and steady on the run. We ran loops around Rocky Mtn Lake park and Berkeley park.

Wednesday, 1/30/13
w/ Julie @  Cheesman Park, 58 mins / 5.85 miles
Picked her up at Maxfund and she was ready to roll - we knocked out 4 loops at the park and treed quite a few squirrels.

w/ Maja & Payton @ Bluffs Park, 61 mins / 5.7 miles
Did the same loop as Monday in the awesome, sunny weather. They enjoyed running up to top of the bluffs and exploring their backyard trails.

Thursday, 1/31/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 60 mins / 6.4 miles
Less ice on the streets today so a bit faster pace. Griff was all business getting over to the park for his usual miles.

w/ Nikko & Louie @ North Table Mtn Park, 60 mins / 5.2 miles
Bit of a slow start on the snowy trail and climbing up to the table, but once up there they ran great and seemed to enjoy the sunny, cold weather.

Louie & Nikko
Friday, 2/1/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 62 mins / 6.7 miles
Best run of the week thanks to the warmer temps and clear paths -  we ran to the park, did inner and outer loops before running the streets back home.

w/ Charlotte & Optimus @ Great Lawn Park, 61 mins / 6.3 miles
With the weather in the 50's, they held up great to get in over 6 miles. We took several water breaks and one rest stop at the 4 mile mark.

Saturday, 2/2/13
w/ Flynn & Otis @ Coors lots, 21 mins / 2.4 miles
Nice quick morning run with the boys to get them out. We went hiking later in the day at Mt. Falcon.

Sunday, 2/3/13
Solo @ Mt. Bierstadt (14,060'), 4hrs / 10 miles
Good mix of running and hiking on my first winter summit of a 14er. Drove to Georgetown and went up Guanella Pass road to about 1.5 miles before the trailhead as that's all that was plowed. Jogged the snowy road up the usual start where calm winds and a fairly packed trail made the ascent relatively stress free. The run back down in Microspikes was a blast.

totals: 15hr28 / 78.35 miles

6 Years

A sampling of pics from the last 6 years of dog running in Chicago & Denver. It's been a lot of miles (close to 15,000), a lot of fun and incredibly rewarding to work, bond and share the joy of running with so many dogs. Thanks to all the owners who have supported this endeavor.

Ran from the house over to the bluffs, climbed 600 ft up on the trail and had fun exploring the ridges.

w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 59  mins / 6.5 miles
He was full of pep for our run this morning, wasting no time getting over to the park for his loops.

w/ Charlotte @ Cheesman Park, 50 mins / 5 miles
She did great on this her second run. We looped the park a few times and explored some of the adjacent neighborhood.

w/ Nikko & Louie @ Rocky Mtn Lake Park, 58 mins / 5.7 miles
Best run yet with this duo, they are getting into a better grove and holding a steady pace longer. Started at Rocky Mtn Lake park with a loop there then headed over to the lake path at Berkeley.

Charlotte excited to get to the park
Wednesday, 1/16/13
w/ Julie @  Cheesman Park, 56 mins / 5.7 miles
A bit sad to see her back at Maxfund but she was super excited to get out for a run. Drove her to the park and let her burn off all the pent up energy.

w/ Maja & Payton @ Bluffs Park, 59 mins / 5.4 miles
Another solid run adventure for these two in the awesome, sunny weather. They enjoyed running up to top of the bluffs and exploring the various trails.

Thursday, 1/17/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 63  mins / 7.1 miles
Great PR distance run for Griff! We kept a speedy pace the whole way and he broke the 7 mile mark for the first time.

Griffin
w/ Nikko & Louie @ North Table Mtn Park, 60 mins / 5.2 miles
They had a blast getting out to this park in Golden to do some trail running. We did the ascent up to the top of North Table twice.

Friday, 1/18/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 60 mins / 6.5 miles
He still had great energy after yesterday's run, nice to see. His fitness has really improved.

w/ Charlotte & Optimus @ Great Lawn Park, 60 mins / 6.1 miles
Fun times today running these two together. With the weather in the 50's, Optimus slowed down the second half but they still went 6.

Saturday, 1/19/13
w/ Flynn @ St. Mary's Glacier, 4 miles
Easy run / hike just checking out this area near James Peak. About a mile up the trail you start the steep ascent up the "tongue" of the glacier. A pair of Microspikes came in handy and Flynn had a blast.

Sunday, 1/20/13
solo @ Bear Peak & Green Mtn, 3hr25 / 13 miles
This loop encompassing these "in town" Boulder peaks has a great mix of everything: steep & rugged pow hiking, buffed out speedy single track and lots of technical stuff in between. Parked on Bear Mtn road, ran up to Mesa then north over to Chat park and took Amphitheater - Saddle Rock - Greenman up to the top of Green; down Bear Green to Bear West Ridge then up to Bear Peak and finished down Fern Canyon.

totals: 14hr35 / 81.5 miles

Payton
Tuesday, 1/8/13

Great to see Griffy after the holiday break, he ran great over to the park for our loops.

w/ Auggie @ Great Lawn Park, 57 mins / 7.15 miles
He was ready to roll as usual. My legs a bit tired so I was just trying not to slow him down too much.

w/ Nikko & Louie @ Berkeley Park, 60 mins / 5.5 miles
Nice steady run with this duo, a couple laps around Berkeley and then ran over to Rocky Mtn Lake park for a loop there before heading back to the truck.

Louie & Nikko
Wednesday, 1/9/13
w/ Baby @ Mt. Falcon in Morrison, 65 mins / 5.7 miles
Fun day taking him out to the trails, and great to be back running uphill - up Castle to the picnic table, down Turkey Trot.

w/ Maja & Payton @ Bluffs Park, 60 mins / 5.4 miles
Basically a repeat of Monday's run, on a mild sunny day. They ran better today with Payton hardly pulling at all.

Thursday, 1/10/13
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 60 mins / 6.25 miles
Another solid run over in the park, he got some extra of sniffing and marking done today.

w/ Nikko & Louie @ North Table Mountain Park, 60 mins / 5.1 miles
Good times checking out the trails at this park in Golden. Stout climb up to the "table" and then ran around the single and double-track trails.

Friday, 1/11/13
w/ Griffin @ wash Park, 60 mins / 6.5 miles
His runner finally had some pep in the legs so he got to go a bit faster pace during the hour.

w/ Charlotte & Optimus @ Great Lawn Park, 61 mins / 6.2 miles
Big Guy helped show new dog Charlotte the ropes, they ran great together. We drove to the park to start and they ran 4 miles together before putting Charlotte back in the truck - didn't want to push her too far on her first run. Optimus and I looped 2 more miles near the truck and he kept up a strong pace.

Charlotte & Optimus
Saturday, 1/12/13
w/ Flynn @ Great Lawn Park, 54 mins / 6 miles
Stayed in the city on this cold morning, 9 degrees at the start. Flynn had fun exploring the park and getting in his miles.

Sunday, 1/13/13
w/ Flynn @ Boulder's Green Mountain, 2hr07 / 10.8 miles
Great to have Flynn along for the first summit of Green in 2013; pretty cold out but stoked to be back on these trails. Parked on Bear Mtn Drive, ran up to Mesa, then Bear Canyon and Green Bear up to the top. Flynn explored around a bit and then we ran back down the same way.

totals: 14hrs / 82 miles

w/ Flynn & Otis @ Coors lots, 18 mins
Still recovering from the flu, at least got in a short run

Tuesday, 12/25/12
w/ Baby @ Cheesman Park, 30 mins
Christmas Day run with new MaxFund dog (Julie got adopted). We took it pretty easy but he seems to have great running potential.

Wednesday, 12/26/12
w/ Griffin @ Wash Park, 60 mins / 6.25 miles
Feeling back to normal, nice run with Griff over to the park for our loops.

w/ Optimus & Rowdy, 61 mins / 6.2 miles
Great to pair these two up for a run, and they did well together (similar pace).

w/ Maja & Payton @ Bluffs Park, 65 mins / 5.32 miles
The chunky snow on the bluffs slowed things down, but still a good workout for these two.

Thursday, 12/27/12

w/ Flynn @ Canal Trail, Scottsdale, AZ - 30 mins

Just a short taper run to shake out legs.

Monday, 12/31/12
solo @ Across The Years 24hr event, 70 miles in 14.5 hrs
Wow fixed timed races, especially ones that are totally flat (1.05 mile loop) with no muscle pounding variation, are tough. I don't like walking much in races so just decided to go for it and see if I could run a (relatively) fast PR 100 mile time. The race started at 9am and I had 70 miles done by 11:30pm, but by then the quads were totally fried and locked up from running the hard track all day. I could hardly walk much less run so stopped and called it a day. Bummed not to hit my original goal but it was fun just to run and see how things would progress and what the final distance would be.

To put a little perspective on the race (but of course not make excuses ;) one of the participants was Ian Sharman. He holds the fastest 100-mile trail time in North America: 12hr 44mins. We chatted around midnight and he said he couldn't believe how hard the course had become and how bad his legs felt. He slogged it out the whole 24 hrs and wound up with 109 miles total - only 9 miles further than his record setting 100, with an extra 11+ hours of time! His two performances illustrate quite well how fixed time events like these, on flat, hard surface loops are much harder than regular fixed distance trail races. So if you're looking for a challenge...

Well that's a wrap for 2012, overall the best running year I've ever had. Only took 2 days off all year, ran 4 ultras and a marathon. The highlight was definitely completing Leadville 100 (and running the next day).

2013

Animas River
Saturday, 1/5/13
w/ Flynn & Otis @ Coors lots, 25 mins
Finished the drive back from AZ and got the pups out to stretch their legs and burn off some pent-up-in-the-car energy.

Sunday, 1/6/13
w/ Charlotte & solo @ Cheesman Park, 55 mins / 6 miles
Did a short evaluation run for new client dog Charlotte (sweet 18 month old silver lab) and then went to Cheesman for 3 quick loops. Legs finally feel fully recovered from ATY.
